Reflection On Quarter One
The major argument this quarter was that there is still inequality. If you use Jefferson's essay for example he talks about how they still didn't have their rights even though they moved away from the British Colony. In King's speech he talk about how African American still didn't have equality even though slavery was over. They were still facing discrimination. Inequality was the overall theme for quarter one.

Columnist Rhetorical Analysis Reflection

My columnist this quarter was Cal Thomas. His two most used strategies were accusing and promoting. He would accuse people for things they would do wrong. He would let everyone know what it is the person did wrong. While he accused people he also promoted people. He talked good things about rhem and would explain why they're so good.
The Great Gatsby
The American Dream is the idea that everyone has an equal chance of having success and property through hard work. In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby got most of his wealth handed to him, he didn't have to work hard. While on the other hand Nick didn't have much fortune and even though he always worked hard and tried his best to have his writings published and noticed. In Stanton's essay, she talks about inequality and this can tie up with the American Dream. One of her examples were that women didn't get paid enough as men do. In the American Dream everyone is equal but in her essay she explains men and women aren't. In Jefferson's essay he talks about how they still don't have their full rights even though they moved. This relates to the American Dream because not everyone is equal.

In my next formal paper I will use more evidence from the text. I will also use more analysis.
40-Minute Timed Write
Reflection
In quarter 1 I learned how to better analyze text and how to properly write an essay. I learned all the parts of a essay. The most meaningful thing to me this quarter was reading the two essays because we can actually relate them to the real world. I gained the most from learning about the American Dream and comparing stories and texts to it. I wish we had skipped reading reading the Great Gatsby. My quarter 2 goal is to get at least an 80 on every assinment we get.

Reflection On Quarter 2
Columnist Precis Paper
David Brooks uses many rhetorical devices. The most he uses though is anecdote. He also uses logos and ethos. In some he uses perspective also. He uses those and many more.
One of the devices Brooks uses is anecdote. He uses this to advance his overall meaning by using short stories to prove his point. He uses stories from his life or others. This advances his point since he has a story to back it up. Overall with him using anecdote he can back up his ideas.
Another of the other devices Brooks uses is logos. By using logos he shows that he knows things. The audience see that there is logic into what he is saying. He advances his meanings using logos because people see he is reliable. By using logos he hows himself trustworthy.

Quarter 2 Reflection

In quarter 2 I learned how to properly write a synthesis essay. I also learned about Nature vs Nurture. Unit was meaningful to me because it I can use what I learned and relate it to the real world. People's identity can be formed from biology or culture. I gained knowledge on people and their identity.
I wish we had skipped reading "Their eyes were watching God". It did not interest me. In quarter 3 I am looking forward to get better on doing the 45 minute timed write. I am not looking forward to reading the next story. My goal for quarter 3 is to pass with a 90% or higher.
